362 and Counting (Final B-Day Update) (We Hope)

To whomever,

How did you know?

On March 26 from 2pm (EST) till 3pm [Nena's 99 Red Balloons was] all that played on [VH1,] the American specialty music channel, over and over (and over) again.

The Nena marathon was for the final hour of the station’s “Pay to Play for Hurricane Katrina Relief” fundraiser. According to the Associated Press, “Viewers could request one video to be played on VH1 Classic for every $25 donation. For a $35 000 donation, they could select an hour’s worth of music from the 1960’s through the early 1990’s”.

One viewer apparently decided that the channel just couldn’t have enough of the 1984 protest song that so they requested to have it played continuously for an entire hour.

I have a fever, and the only cure is more red balloons. Sad to say I missed it though. Thanks for the effort.

(And thanks to Fletch for the catch)

Yeah, I saw that, and drafted a quick post [never finished]...

From the article:

"99 Luftballons" is a Cold-War era protest song that tells the story of 99 red balloons floating into the air, triggering an apocalypse when the military sends planes to intercept them.

I guess. I mean, I don't really remember it that way. I just remember the sort-of cute singer and her band walking though the German countryside...but if they say so. And it has been twenty-plus years...

Mr Furious, at the timeit was an obviously anti-Reagan anti-America protest song. (Really, the Europeans hated us a lot more then than they do now, and Reagan was MUCH worse than Hitler, Stalin and New Coke rolled into one.) It was also the most idiotic protest song ever written, but that's hardly the point. The point was that it was catchy, and the girl was cute! And truthfully, most songs don't really stand up to any kind of analysis of their lyrical content.

And Pooh, I think one of your internal regulators is broken. I'm pretty sure that there aren't any cowbells in 99 Luft Balloons. (And I don't believe that Warren G. ever used any cowbells either, although I'm not really that familiar with his ouvre.) You might want to have a doctor check that out. You are reaching an age where you should have those kinds of things checked regularly.

I don't know about making this the final update. Al Franken once declared that the 1980s were the Decade of Al Franken. I don't see why we can't have Year of Pooh.

I had no idea it was a protest song. Most of the people around me at the time probably did (I had a lot of European friends that year), but it never came up.

That's kind of cool, though the idea that someone had that much money and decided to do this.... disturbing.
